Former Trevian Players Distributes Clothing in Jamaica
August 1, 2008
The following is a first-hand account from team leader and NCC Pastor Duayne Meyer:

We had three distribution areas:

The Richmond Road United Church (very rural, about 5 miles from the town of Richmond)

Richmond Road Hall and Homework/Literacy Center in Richmond

The Pringle Children’s Home

Our team took along 20 large duffle bags of clothing (mostly the Galex bags you gave us) and shoes (from Northshore Soccer). Much of the gear came from the Trevian/FC United.  We took 10 bags of clothing to the Pringle Children’s Home.   We distributed five bags each to the other two sites indicated above.  The bags were HUGE and many of our kids could barely lug the nearly fifty pounds we stuffed into each one. We weighed the bags to make sure we got the most bang for the buck!  All the hassle at airports was well worth it when we saw the children and how delighted they were to have something nice, new and, particularly “football” related.  Honestly, I don’t think any of us could keep from getting a lump in our throats as we handed out the clothing. It was pretty emotional.

Besides distributing clothing, we helped to rehab the Richmond Church fellowship hall for use as a homework/literacy center and also worked on constructing a home out in even more rural Portland, managing to bring the house from the foundation up to the roof line.  I am not sure you will find Richmond on a regular map and maybe not Portland either. Both places are pretty remote and far, far away from tourist attractions.  We were in areas around Port Maria and Annotto Bay, which you should be able to locate on a map.

Anyway, the Trevians and FC United made a whole bunch of kids happy last week. THANK YOU for donating the clothing… it was simply awesome to get to share them with the children and see the joy in their faces.

Blessings,

Duayne
